Digital Color Formats

Learn different formats for representing colors in digital design

Introduction

In digital design, colors can be represented in various formats. Each format has its advantages and is used in different contexts.

HEX Color Codes

HEX (hexadecimal) format is widely used in web design. It consists of a # symbol and six hexadecimal digits (0-9, A-F) representing red, green, and blue channels. The format is compact and easy to read.

#FF5733, #00A8CC, #F5F5F5

RGB and RGBA

RGB format uses three values from 0 to 255 for red, green, and blue channels. RGBA adds an alpha channel (transparency) from 0 to 1. This format is intuitive and often used in graphics editors.

rgb(255, 87, 51), rgba(0, 168, 204, 0.5)

HSL and HSLA

HSL format describes color through hue, saturation, and lightness. HSLA adds an alpha channel. This format is convenient for programmatically changing color properties, such as darkening or lightening.

hsl(9, 100%, 60%), hsla(195, 100%, 40%, 0.5)

CSS Color Keywords

CSS provides a set of predefined color keywords such as 'red', 'blue', 'green', and others. These keywords are convenient for quick use but are limited in the number of available colors.

red, blue, green, coral, skyblue
