Theory of Split-Complementary Colors: Softened Contrast
The split-complementary scheme consists of a base color and two colors positioned on either side of its complementary color on the color wheel. For example, if the base color is blue (240°), its complementary is orange (60°), and the split colors are red-orange (30°) and yellow-orange (90°). This creates a Y-shaped structure on the color wheel.
The advantage of this scheme is that it maintains the high contrast of the complementary scheme but softens visual tension, making the composition more balanced and pleasant.
The цветовая гармония tool automatically calculates split-complementary colors for any selected color, using mathematical color wheel principles.
